The Ontario government is committed to increasing physical activity among Ontarians through
a number of initiatives. The Community Sport, Fitness, and Recreation Initiative is one of the
key strategies for increasing participation in community programs. This initiative is a joint
project with many partners including the Ministry of Citizenship, the Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care, the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, and Parks and Recreation Ontario,
among others.
One of the main objectives of this initiative is to develop useful tools for all those who work in
community sport, fitness, and recreation settings, whether they are leaders, coaches,
instructors, supervisors or policy-makers. The Tools in the Active2010 ToolKit are based on
solid research findings and appropriate health promotion and behavioural change techniques.
They are designed to help people make enjoyable physical activity part of their lifestyle. They
are intended to help those working in community sport, fitness, and recreation settings to
develop new techniques and to improve existing ones for getting more Ontarians more active.
